Back in May at the Cannes Film Festival Penélope Cruz attended a photo call for Broken Embraces (Spanish title: “Los Abrazos Rotos”) looking breathtaking in a nude Dolce & Gabbana ruched strapless silk dress which she accessorized with matching satin Christian Louboutin peep-toe pumps.
Emily Blunt wore the same dress 2 days ago at the 16th Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute looking equally gorgeous. The actress decided to spice up her outfit by adding a bit of bling and a matching beige clutch which fit well with her beige Louboutin t-strap pumps. Emily also replaced the original grosgrain belt of the dress with a cute bow-tied one.
Oh my, this fashion faceoff is a tough one because I adore the dress on both women. However, I slightly prefer Penélope’s look and even though she opted out of accessorizing I am still totally blown away by how soft and feminine the dress looked on her, so it’s Penélope for me. Whom do you prefer seeing in this dress?

I haven’t awarded a Red Carpet Gold Star for quite some time now. While there were many red carpet appearance that I liked or even loved, none of them really made me go WOW! – the little extra something was always missing. Penélope Cruz however REALLY stunned me today and rightfully deserves to be crowned. The Spanish actress attended the London premiere of Broken Embraces looking ravishing in red in a double-breasted red Bottega Veneta Resort 2010 suit. You know you love it when you can’t stop staring.
What impressed me even more about Penélope’s look is that she could’ve easily called one of her designer friends and choose a $10k couture gown, but instead she opted for this almost casual suit and _still_ knocked it all out of the fashion ball park. Her grace and attitude were what made this look outstanding. Te Quiero, Penélope!
P.S.: Love the shoes as well (and that’s coming from a girl who usually hates everyting t-strap).

Sarah Silverman

Rating:

Sarah Silverman was by far the worst dressed on the red carpet. The funny woman tried to pull off a joke by pairing a black prom-like dress with red Converse Chucks and a pair of tennis socks. Was that supposed to be funny? I mean I do get that she tried to make fun of the red carpet frenzy here, but the joke backfired instead making Sarah herself be the joke. She probably won’t be too bothered about it though and will laugh it away like a good comedian should.
Kristen Bell

Rating:

Kristen Bell is another one who got it all wrong with her outfit. Did she really think a shapeless creased silver tube dress would make her look good? Kristen normally puts a lot of effort in her red carpet outfits, so I suppose she missed the date of the Critics’ Choice Awards, got panicked and snapped the next best thing out of the laundry.
I give her half a star fo the grey patent stilettos and another half for the cute statement necklace. These are the best things about her attire.
UPDATE: I cannot believe this shapeless dress is a piece from the Stella McCartney Spring 2009 collection. But it still looks a thousand times better on the model.
Marisa Tomei

Rating:

Marisa Tomei also had a hard time pulling off this black Giambattista Valli Fall 2006 dress. The dress is gorgeous as it was presented on the runway, but it should’ve been adjusted to fit Tomei’s tiny frame (especially shortened because it looks so unflattering at this length). A typical case of dress domination.
Penélope Cruz

Rating:

Penélope Cruz is normally ones of my red carpet faves. Not that she is a big fashion risk taker, but she usually wears something beautiful and elegant that makes her stand out from the crowd (think Oscars 2007).
Unfortunately this was not the case here when Penélope chose to walk the red carpet in a midnight blue strapless Yves Saint Laurent gown. Not that it’s an ugly dress, but it looks simply plain and boring on Penélope who didn’t seem too fond of her dress choice as well. Let’s hope she’s saved the best for the big occassions.
I do envy Penélope’s YSL clutch though.
