MOCA NEW 30th Anniversary Gala – Best Dressed

by Profashionelle on November 15, 2009 · 0 comments

Christina Ricci, Kate Beckinsale, Marisa Tomei, Zoe Saldana, Rose McGowan and Kate Bosworth at the MOCA New 30th Anniversary Gala 2009

Christian Ricci is always so confident and easy on the red carpet, it’s unbelievable. Her black Prada Spring 2010 dress might not have been the most eye-catching number, but she managed to make a lasting impact on me nonetheless.

Kate Beckinsale was the impersonation of perfection in her teal Andrew Gn Fall one-shoulder gown. Her make-up and accessories were flawless as usual. We are not worthy.

The lovely Marisa Tomei. She is such a dare devil on the red carpet. I don’t think anyone but her could’ve pulled off a poufy barbie pink floral brocade dress without looking ridiculous in it. On others this dress would’ve been too girly, but on Marisa it looks just feminine and elegant.

After a disastrous outing in Miu Miu at the Prada Book Launch Cocktail Party on Friday, Zoe Saldana completely redeemed herself by looking spectacular in a sparkling black tulle gown from Marchesa’s Fall 2009 collection. It’s all about forget and forgive.

Rose McGowan went for drama in her scarlet red Donna Karan strapless gown which had a beautiful draped bodice. She’s proof that there’s no such thing as looking “too glamourous“.

While most women opted for bold gowns Kate Bosworth chose to dress up in a short and sexy leopard printed dress by Proenza Schouler. Rawrr!

Costume Institute Gala 2009 – Worst Dressed

by Profashionelle on May 5, 2009 · 0 comments

Keep hitting the F5 on your keyboard from time to time as I will be updating this post throughout the night. Best Dressed are here.

Rachel Weisz

Rachel Weisz wearing a lilac Vera Wang lilac strapless tulle gown

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

It pains me to put Rachel Weisz in here, but she got it all wrong. Her lilac strapless Vera Wang tulle gown totally washed her out, the make-up was waaaay too dark (OMG!@ berry lips) and why, oh why, is that yellow fabric peeking out from under the hem? Sorry, Rachel, you can do so much better.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale wearing a navy Marchesa Fall 2009 ruffled tulle gown

Rating: ★½☆☆☆

I’ve had enough with Kate Beckinsale. Her Marchesa Fall 2009 navy tulle gown was, as you would expect from Kate, over the top and unnecessary. I have never liked this dress in the first place, but seeing it on Kate makes it even worse because she ALWAYS plays it safe and never moves out of her comfort zone.

Marchesa Fall 2009

Rihanna

Rihanna wearing a black satin Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2009 tuxedo suit with voluminous shoulders

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Rihanna, please stop trying so hard. Don’t get me wrong, I love the runway look, but Rihanna makes it look so desperate for attention and so silly I can’t stand it.

I also find it always were amusing when at prestigious events such as the Costume Institute Gala where women are expected to wear beautiful, feminine princess dresses there are always 1 or 2 witty female individuals who opt out of this dress code. These women think they will come off so edgy and anti-establishment when they wear something super masculine like a suit or a tuxedo for example. GENIUS, girl! I bet no one else EVER had the same idea.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2009

Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester wearing a printed Louis Vuitton Fall 2009 bubble dress with printed leggings

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Imagine Leighton Meester‘s outfit without the leggings and you have a Best Dressed candidate. Leighton’s head-to-toe Louis Vuitton Fall 2009 look is a perfect example when too much becomes too bad. Such a shame!

Louis Vuitton Fall 2009

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway wearing an eggplant Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 strapless dress

Rating: ★★½☆☆

Anne Hathaway channelled 60s Jackie O chic and me no likey. I love Anne just as anybody else, but this eggplant Marc Jacobs bubbly dress does absolutely nothing for her. Not digging the hair and shoes as well.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2009

Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 purple bubble hem dress

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts wearing a red Atelier Versace Spring 2009 bubble-shaped mini dress

Rating: ★★½☆☆

I know a lot of you will not agree with me for putting Emma Roberts on the Worst Dressed list, but let me try to get my point across. I absolutely ADORE this red bubble-shaped Atelier Versace Spring 2009 mini dress. In fact it’s one of my favorite from that collection. But you can tell from a mile away that this dress was the wrong choice for Emma. It’s a dress for a SUPERMODEL! And even then I think it would be quite tricky to pull it off because of the shape. Emma looks weird and unsure of herself, the dress owns her. Not good.

Why did Donatella give it away for Emma? I mean, come on! I would have LOVED to see it on Gisele, Linda or Naomi. They would have done this dress justice.

66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009 – Best Dressed

by Profashionelle on January 12, 2009 · 0 comments

Olivia Wilde

Olivia Wilde in a lavender Reem Acra Bridal Spring 2008 gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★★

It was all about Olivia Wilde in her strapless lavender gown for me. She was nothing short of SPECTACULAR in that exquisite dress with a voluminous ruffled skirt and I adored the soft pastel color on her.

Even though 2009 has just begun, I am pretty sure this dress is going to be in my “Top 5 Dresses of 2009“.

Amy Adams

Amy Adams in a black Oscar De La Renta Spring 2009 dress at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★★

Amy Adams was pure magic in her black strapless gown which had a voluminous skirt and leaf embellishments all over the dress. Amy opted for emerald green leaf-shaped earrings (♥ ♥ ♥) to complete her look.

It was a safe choice for Amy to wear this dress, but she looked SO, SO great in it, I couldn’t care less.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway in a dark blue Armani Privé gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★★

Anne Hathaway was almost equally stunning in her midnight blue strapless gown from the collection. The dress’s sparkling bodice was shining against Anne’s flawless alabaster skin and her stunning earrings got me gushing over her perfect ensemble.

Loved the red nail polish as well.

Laura Linney

Laura Linney in a yellow Elie Saab Spring 2008 Couture gown - 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★★

A striking Laura Linney outshined most of her younger colleagues on the red carpet in a yellow one-shouldered gown.

The asymmetrical dress was embellished at the waist and beautifully draped at the hips. I also loved Laura’s lovely leaf-shaped earrings (♥).

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet in a black Yves Saint Laurent dress at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★½

Kate Winslet was my No.1 girl crush last night. She was such a stunner! I’m so glad she won both awards for “Best Supporting Actress” and “Best Actress“. Her acceptance speech was so touching, I had to dash away one or two tears of my own.

While I will admit that her black strapless Yves Saint Laurent isn’t the most exciting dress, I am convinced Kate carried it off with more elegance than everyone else who attended the Golden Globes last night. She has so much class. I ♥ you, Kate!

January Jones

January Jones in a blue Versace Spring 2009 dress at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

January Jones channelled old Hollywood last night in her sky blue one-shouldered dress and blonde retro waves.

Her dress had pockets at the side and gold lining along the folds. Quintessential Versace and I absolutely LOVED it!

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria in a red Reem Acra gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Eva Longoria turned heads in a dramatic red strapless Reem Acra gown which had a long mermaid hem and scalloped edging on the bodice. The Desperate Housewives star completed her look with silver jewelry (loooove the flower-shaped earrings) and a Daniel Swarovski clutch.

This type of dress is favored by Eva for big events such as the Golden Globes. Though being a slightly predictable choice, no one is going to blame Eva for looking so stunning in this red gown.

Rumer Willis

Rumer Willis in a purple Reem Acra Pre-Fall 2009 gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globes 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Miss Golden Globe 2009 Rumer Willis opted for an eggplant Reem Acra Pre-Fall 2009 strapless gown which she accessorized with a black jeweled belt and looked absolutely enchanting in it.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek in a Bottega Veneta gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Salma Hayek sure knows how to dress her assets. The racy actress strut the red carpet in a figure-hugging ivory Bottega Veneta dress and accessorized with Boucheron jewelry and a grey Bottega Veneta woven box clutch.

Evan Rachel Wood

Evan Rachel Wood in a black Elie Saab Fall 2006 Couture gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Evan Rachel Wood looked absolutely svelte in a sparkling black tiered gown which had a plunging neckline and floral appliqué at the waist.

A great look for Evan. Maybe next time we’ll get to see a little more color on her.

Jennifer Morrison

Jennifer Morrison in a blue Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2009 gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Jennifer Morrison opted for some color on the red carpet and donned a cobalt blue strapless ruched dress. The actress completed her look with an elegant updo and beautiful matching Lorraine Schwartz earrings.

This dress was one of my favorites of Oscar De La Renta‘s Pre-Fall 2009 collection and it’s great to see someone like Jennifer pulling it off effortlessly.

America Ferrera

America Ferrera in a taupe Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2009 dress at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Kudos to America Ferrera for NOT wearing black. She was also one of the few who did not opt for floor-length gowns. Instead America went for an asymmetrical taupe knee-length dress from the collection which she accessorized with silver jewelry and matching peep-toe pumps. Gorgeous!

Mary-Louise Parker

Mary-Louise Parker in a cobalt blue Carlos Miele Spring 2009 gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Mary-Louise Parkerfelt blue” last night and opted for a cobalt blue strapless dress which had asymmetrical tiers cascading down from the bodice with a floaty chiffon train at the bottom. The actress completed her look with a Mary Norton clutch and Chopard jewelry.

I wasn’t too fond of the blue eyeshadow though.

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore in a light blue John Galliano for Dior gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Drew Barrymore was delicate in her dusty blue John Galliano off-the-shoulder gown. Most people weren’t discussing her dress though, but her big messy hair. Personally I didn’t really like it, but apart from that Drew looked to good to not being on the “Best Dressed”-list. But I am still not sold on the red clutch, too.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale in a white J.Mendel gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Kate Beckinsale is starting to annoy me with her really booooring dress choices. Yes, she looked great in that white strapless dress from J.Mendel (again!), but her dresses are all the same. Strapless, figure-hugging and often white. And those ruby red chandelier earrings didn’t do anything for me either. Start reading some fashion blogs, Kate!

Beyoncé Knowles

Beyoncé Knowles in sparkling Elie Saab Spring 2008 Couture gown at the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Beyoncé Knowles in was also very predictable. The singer left her alter ego Sasha Fierce at home and turned to her old bling bling “Look, here I am!“-self with a faible for too-tight-to-stand-straight-in-it type of dresses. I liked her more when she tried the risky route (think Gareth Pugh).

Beyoncé’s necklace was to die for though, so she hits the last place on “Best Dressed“.

14th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards – Best Dressed

by Profashionelle on January 9, 2009 · 0 comments

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie in a white Max Azria Spring 2009 gown and Brad Pitt - 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Angelina Jolie likes to wear a lot of dark colors on the red carpet, so it was a welcome surprise to see her in something other than black. The beautiful actress strut the red carpet in a gorgeous snow white one-sleeved gown looking statuesque alongside partner Brad Pitt who happened to be a good match in his black suit.

Angelina wore her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail and accessorized with pearl earrings, a white Hervé Léger Spring 2009 box clutch and a pair of matching white satin peep-toe pumps.

If someone else had worn this dress, I’d probably found it just OK, but Angie is working the hell out of this dress. And her hypnotic gaze does the rest. Red carpets were invented for women like her.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes in a pink Hervé Léger dress at the 14th Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★☆☆

A red carpet event wouldn’t be what it is if we hadn’t at least one celebrity go for the body-con Hervé Léger. Young Hollywood loves its curve hugging bandage dresses, so I was the last to be surprised seeing Amanda Bynes rocking a hot pink version from the Spring 2009 collection.

Amanda who is having the same hairstyle for ages accessorized the pink minidress with black sparkling Christian Louboutin slingbacks and a gold clutch. She should have matched her clutch with the black pumps instead. This would have given her outfit an Alexander McQueen feel to it making her attire less booooring.

Indeed it’s a VERY predictable choice and I am as tired as everyone of all the Hervé Léger overload, but I won’t deny that Amanda looked absolutely sexy in it. Like a real-life Barbie doll (which is not automatically a bad thing because you know we all loved and caressed our precious Barbies back then, didn’t we?).

I will give this one to Amanda for reviving old childhood memories, but this is certainly the last time I’m putting a celebrity wrapped in Hervé Léger on the “Best Dressed“-list. Go and get yourself some creativity, Hollywood!

Amy Adams

Amy Adams in a blue Oscar De La Renta Pre-Fall 2009 dress at the 14th Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★½☆

Amy Adams was her usual fabulous self looking flawless in a royal blue strapless cocktail dress from the collection. The redhead adorned her dress with a silver brooch at the hip and accessorized with a matching silver clutch and .

Loving the natural make-up, especially the nude lipstick. Beautiful!

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway in a black and white Gianfranco Ferré Spring 2009 dress at the 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★★☆

Anne Hathaway was undergoing a major style improvement in 2008 and the trend seems to continue in 2009. The lovely actress looked stunning in a black and white folded strapless dress from the collection. I am loving the Cruella de Vil vibe of her dress.

Anne completed her look with sleek hair, hoop earrings, a transparent belt with a golden buckle and black platform peep-toes.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria in a turquoise Monique Lhuillier Spring 2009 dress at the 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★½☆

Eva Longoria sticked to her usual short cocktail dresses and brought some much needed color to the red carpet by wearing a turquoise halter-neck dress with gold embellishments at the neck and waist.

It’s a typical Monique Lhuillier design and a bit of a safe option for Eva, but you really can’t blame her for choosing it. It’s a beautiful dress and the gold embellishments against the rich turquoise color remind me of summer, so I will forgive her for being a tad boring. This time.

See how Eva elongated her legs by wearing nude Christian Louboutin pumps? I would’ve ditched the yellow clutch for a matching gold one though.

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale in J.Mendel Pre-Fall 2009 - 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★½☆

Kate Beckinsale was beautiful as usual wearing what she wears best: figure-hugging strapless gowns. This chocolate brown dress is a good choice, but I start to tire of Kate’s safe approach to red carpet fashion. I wish she’d let Anne Hathaway or Diane Kruger inspire her to change her dressing habits to being more adventurous when it comes to fashion.

Diane Lane & Josh Brolin

Diane Lane in Monique Lhuillier -14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★½☆

Many celebrities dress in black on the red carpet and end up looking boring and uninspired. If you happen to be Diane Lane however wearing a sequined black Monique Lhuillier dress with a black satin bow tied to your waist, there’s absolutely no need to worry. A good looking hubby on your side doesn’t hurt either though.

Danielle Ward

Danielle Ward in a black and white paisley print dress at the 14th Annual Critics' Choice Awards 2009

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Writer Danielle Ward looked very elegant in her monochrome floral printed strapless dress which had a sweetheart neckline and a sparkling brooch attached.

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes in Marchesa Resort 2008 - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★★½

Amanda Bynes was picture perfect in a stunning teal blue embellished strapless gown.

A perfect red carpet moment for Amanda and she definitely managed to stand out between all the big names. This is the best I’ve seen Amanda look so far and I hope she stays on that course fashionwise in 2008.

P.S.: I cannot tell you how much I adore Amanda’s do. She looks like a gorgeous fairy tale princess. Pure perfection & my red carpet favorite yet.

Ashley Tisdale

Ashley Tisdale - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★½☆

Ashley Tisdale looks very grown up and sophisticated in this beautiful white floor-length gown. Maybe it’s the new nose which makes her look so different here, but I think I also like her hair here. She still needs to learn how to strike a good pose though.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria in Naeem Khan Spring 2008 - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★★☆

For someone as petite as Eva Longoria floor-length gowns aren’t easy to pull off, but the Desperate Housewives star does it with grace as per usual.

At this year’s SAGs Eva was giving us some old Hollywood glamour wearing a sexy ice white gown which gave us a pretty good sight on her fully-exposed back.

But the real deal about Eva’s look are her dazzling Verdura earrings if you ask me. Dramatic!

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale in Luisa Beccaria Spring 2008- SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★★☆

Kate Beckinsale was a glowing beauty in this lemon yellow strapless satin gown. She accesorized her shiny appearance with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Kate sure knows how to work the red carpet. I love the color of the dress and it’s a pleasant change to finally see some daring hues on the red carpet. Kate explains her color choice:

“It’s such a miserable day here I thought I’d bring a little sunshine.”

Marcia Cross

Marcia Cross in Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2008 - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★★☆

Marcia Cross turned heads by wearing a gorgeous teal strapless floor-length gown. The dazzling contrast between the color of the dress and Marcia’s shiny red hair is fierce.

Marcia complemented her draping frock with jewels from Lorraine Schwartz.

Marion Cotillard

Marion Cotillard in Nina Ricci Spring 2008 - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★★☆

Marion Cotillard was another red carpet favorite of mine wearing an amazing corseted, pleated and gathered strapless gown with Chopard jewelry.

Also thumbs up for Marion wearing her hair up; this was the best decision she could make for this dress. This cloudy grey gown needs space to make a bold statement. The only downside of Marion’s getup was the color of the dress – it was a tad boring.

Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer in Versace Pre-Fall 2008 - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★½☆

The age defying Michelle Pfeiffer chose to look absolutely fabulous by wearing a brownish monochrome cocktail dress. The dress is a bit of an understatement for such a big ceremony as the SAG Awards, but she makes it work for her.

Michelle finished off her look by pairing her dress with matching satin peep-toe Louboutins. Lovely!

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush - SAG Awards 2008

Rating: ★★★½☆

Sophia Bush seems to have picked up on Michelle Pfeiffer because she also decided to go with a brown short strapless frock. While the color isn’t one I would’ve chosen for such an event, I do like the sheeny silhouette of Sophia’s ruched cocktail dress.
